Part 2 of the Machine Vision World Tour with Nerian

Our second destination of our “Machine Vision World Tour with Nerian” takes us to Irvine, California, USA.

Not far away from Beverly Hills, Universal Studios and Disneyland, we meet our valued sales partner MoviMED and have a talk with Markus Tarin, President and CEO of MoviMED.

"Even if you are not sure what 2D or 3D machine vision solution you need, yet - just get in touch with us! You'll be glad you did!"

Markus Tarin, President & CEO of MoviMED

Nerian Vision: Hello Markus, we are very happy you joined our little virtual machine vision world tour. Could you give us a short historical summary of MoviMED?

Markus Tarin: “Hello, thank you I am happy to be on board. Of course: Since I founded the company back in 1999, MoviMED has been involved in the development of countless imaging systems. We first started out with a focus on medical imaging applications, indicated by the “MED” portion in our name. Our company developed scientific imaging systems for point of care testing, rapid infectious disease testing, DNA research, rapid drug discovery and many more applications.

Our engineering team often worked as the extended R&D department for medical startup and established companies alike. When the industry changed and Venture Capital and Private Equity firms were no longer as forth coming with funding these endeavors, MoviMED had to adopt to this change. We ventured out into industrial applications in a variety of industries.”

NV: And MoviMED today?

MT: “Our team of about 9 engineers has since been involved with high-end, high-resolution and high-speed line scan, 2D and 3D imaging applications. We are known in the industry as the go-to company for machine vision, when everything else has failed.

Many of our employees have worked for MoviMED for more than 10 years, which speaks not only to how rewarding of a workplace this company is, but moreover to the quality of people and depth of knowledge we bring to the table as a team. More recently, we have decided to refocus our efforts solely on 3D imaging applications.”

NV: What is your mission?

MT: “We strive to educate our customers and share our knowledge to select the most cost-effective solutions. We make sure to point out potential risks and pitfalls along the way based on valuable and often painful lessons learned in the past. We believe in honesty and integrity from beginning to end to build mutually beneficial and long lasting business relationships.

Whether you wish to integrate our 3D Cameras and Sensor Solutions yourself, need some assistance or prefer a turnkey 3D imaging solution with custom software and maybe even some part handling or robotics, we are here to help!”

NV: What is it about your company that makes you stand out or should convince potential customers to get in contact with you?

MT: “MoviMED is a very unique company with a very in-depth knowledge in machine vision in 2D, but also in 3D. We are comprised of a small group of very enthusiastic and passionate engineers that can’t wait to solve the next challenge.

We have solved a lot of problems in very innovative ways, often surpassing the status quo in the industry. We take a holistic approach to our customers challenges to arrive at a reliable 3D imaging solution with a favorable return on investment. We are one of very few companies in the world that understand 3D imaging and robotics equally well. This allows us to combine the two seamlessly.”

NV: How do you approach customer inquiries?

MT: “Our process usually always starts out with the collection of detailed requirements to paint a better picture. After that, we typically recommend doing a feasibility or imaging study with customer provided sample parts. This can either be performed in our 3D Imaging lab, or at the customer site. Gaining a statistical knowledge of the part measurements assures a successful integration of the selected technology. This process has worked very well for our customer and for us in many projects.”

NV: What motivates you day after day?

MT: “We have been in business for more than 20 years. Many of our engineers have been with us for over ten years. We are technological enthusiasts and just love to solve problems. Solving our customer’s challenges is what keeps us motivated. Often we hear that our customers have hired two or more solution provider before, without any success. Those are the most rewarding cases to solve. However, we also understand quickly, if the requirements are not achievable in a cost effective way. There is value in knowing when it won’t work upfront as well.”

NV: Do you specialize in any areas or applications in particular?

MT: “We have worked on many 3D imaging applications. One we particularly excel in is robotic guidance. This can be utilized in many different applications. Robotic guidance is concerned with providing 3D vision for industrial robots. Example application include: Bin picking, pick and place applications, finishing of manufactured parts and others.
We also have a long history in high-speed and high-resolution 3D imaging for inspecting products at fast production speeds in real-time.”

NV: How do you see the future of machine vision in 5 to 10 years?

MT: “We have seen a good deal of commodification in the 2D machine vision market. Most common 2D machine vision problems can now be solved using smart cameras. 3D imaging is still relatively new. There are a lot of interesting sensors on the market for 3D. However, there are not very many tools available for solving 3D problems. We believe the 3D vision market is poised to grow substantially over the next 5 to 10 years. We will also see machine vision migrating towards embedded applications and consumer applications, as the cost for sensors drop. Artificial intelligence will enable applications, that we haven’t even considered yet.”

NV: “What do you appreciate about working with Nerian?”

MT: “We appreciate the innovative approach that Nerian is taking with real-time 3D stereoscopic imaging. Thus creating opportunity for applications that this technology could not reach before.”

NV: Thank you Markus, working with MoviMED is also a great honor and enrichment for us!

And as a last question, if we were able to trave to California, what is a must-see?

MT:

  • Taking a few days to drive up the coast on Highway 1 from Malibu to San Francisco
  • Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Universal Studios, Disneyland, Legoland
  • Yosemite National Park
  • San Diego

Thank you very much for this detailed interview. We are happy to have such a strong partner on board and look forward to further cooperation.
